The next morning Glynn sat on the corner of my bed while I packed. “Will you be coming back?” she asked in a quiet voice.

I’d created this situation. After the call had ended last night, I’d been distant. Glynn hadn’t pressed. She’d finished what she needed to do in the studio, and we’d returned to my suite, to my bed. “Of course. The deal isn’t finished.”

“Are you in trouble?”

“My father likes to do this from time to time. It is a show of power. He sends us out and then calls us back so that we have to shuffle everything around.” There weren’t enough hours in the day to educate her about all the power games that Lycans could play.

She nodded and continued playing with the edge of the comforter. “I have vacation time… I could fly out and meet you or…come with you.”

“That would be a very bad idea,” I said quickly.

Her eyes widened, and she looked away, but not before I saw the flash of pain in her pretty eyes.

Fuck. I hadn’t handled that right. I dropped my shirts on the bed and walked to her. “Look. When my father is in one of these moods, it’s best if I appease him quickly.”

“I understand.” She didn’t look at me.

“He can be…difficult at the best of times…” He would be pleased that I’d found my mate; however, her being human would be an issue. I hoped that, with time, he would approve of Glynn and our mating. Her talent would be valued. Plus, her gentle spirit would be appreciated. My father disliked difficult women, and he labeled anyone who didn’t agree with him as difficult.

She stood. “I should go. I’m holding you up.”

“Glynn.” I cut her off. “It’s a question of timing. I could be in meetings from the moment I arrive, or he might make me wait. This won’t be a fun visit, and I couldn’t give you the attention that you deserve.”

She rested her hand on my chest. “You are here for work. I get it, Beck.” She flashed a fake smile. “Really, I get it.”

I pulled her close for a kiss.

When I let her go, she walked away without looking back.
